OUR STORY
Built on Experience, Integrity, and doing things the right way.

Meet MICHAEL sowl
My name is Michael Sowl, and I've been in construction since 2003. Long before I ever thought about leading a construction company, I just wanted to build my own home someday. That dream is what pulled me into this industry in the first place.
I started out on the concrete crew during construction of an ethanol plant in Columbus, Nebraska. From there I moved into operating heavy equipment, then worked alongside a millwright team installing motors, conveyors, fans, and mechanical systems. I learned early that construction isn't just swinging a hammer. It's coordination, sequencing, planning, and solving problems before they become disasters.
That mindset came naturally to me. Before construction, I served in the United States Navy as an Electronic Technician during Desert Storm calibrating test equipment, working with precision systems, making sure everything performed exactly as it should. You don't cut corners when lives depend on accuracy, and I never forgot that.
I joined KB Nelson Construction in 2017. The company was founded in 1982 by Kim Nelson, and when I came on board, I came to work not to coast. By 2019, Kim trusted me to manage the company.
He taught me estimating, bidding, client communication, scheduling, and the financial side of the business. More importantly, he taught me that your reputation is everything in this trade.
On July 1st, 2026, Kim passed the torch. I became President of KB Nelson Construction a company with over 40 years of history in this community and a standard of work I take seriously every single day.
I never originally planned on leading a company. I just wanted to build things the right way and work with good people. But here's what I've learned: when you do that consistently, over time, people notice.
I've also learned plenty the hard way.
There were projects early on where I trusted the wrong people or assumed someone knew what they were doing when they didn't. I lost money on jobs because of it. Those mistakes taught me to pay close attention to details, work only with people who share the same standards, and never cut corners to save time or money.
That's one of my biggest frustrations with parts of this industry. Too many contractors overpromise, underbid, then disappear once construction starts. Homeowners are left stressed out, wondering what's happening with their project or where their money went.
At KB Nelson Construction, we focus on communication, honesty, craftsmanship, and making the process easier for homeowners. We handle everything from custom homes and remodels to shops, barns, and decks. We coordinate all subcontractors and serve as the single point of contact throughout the project so clients aren't chasing down five different people trying to get answers.
Over the course of my career, I've helped build nearly 500 homes. Our crew brings decades of combined experience, and many of our subcontractors have worked alongside us for years. We also run our own in-house cabinet shop, which gives us greater quality control and customization options for cabinetry, shelving, trim, and finish work.

One project I'm especially proud of was a river home remodel on the Shoshone River between Cody and Powell. We transformed an older cabin into a beautiful custom home with a large deck overlooking the river. The access road was a steep switchback that made deliveries and equipment coordination a real challenge but seeing that finished home sitting above the river made every bit of it worth it.
Outside of work, I'm a husband, father, and grandfather. My mother and stepfather live with us because of health issues. I stay involved in the community through the Lions, Elks, and Eagles. This area isn't just where I work it's home.
At the end of the day, I want every homeowner who works with us to feel peace of mind. I want them to know the job will be done right, that we'll communicate honestly throughout, and that we'll stand behind our work when it's complete.
Mascots with a Mission

Oak
As KB Nelson Construction mascots, Oak and Aspen represent what the company stands for: loyalty, integrity, patience, and care. They don’t read plans, swing hammers, or draw up contracts but they embody the spirit behind all of it.
